The newly re-formed Kane County Hospital Foundation was able to sponsor two students at this year’s Health Career Exploration Camp. "We accepted the first two applicants this year," explained foundation president Kathleen Salter. "Next year we hope to have a formal Health Career Exploration Camp scholarship program in place and expand the number of recipients."
The Health Career Exploration camp is located in Cedar City on the Southern Utah University campus, under the Utah Center for Rural Health program.
Carrie Torgersen of SUU, explains, "The camp is designed to teach students about health care careers in a hands-on learning environment with health care professionals. Participants participated in 7 different workshops, as well as participated in the SUU-Rocky Mountain Power Challenge Course to learn leadership skills."
The camp is open to all 9th - 12th grade high school students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA. KCHF board was able to hear personally from Abbey Daley and Cheyenne Cox the two young women they sponsored this year, who had recently returned from their camp stay which was began June 7th.
Abbey told us, "This is my second year. We made impressions of my teeth, dissected sheep eyes and cow hearts. We also made chap stick and went to the Vet’s office and helped spay a cat."
"I would like to become an Registered Nurse, continue my studies and become a Physician’s Assistant and maybe even a Doctor," Cheyenne stated.
Both girls were very impressive. They expressed their thanks for the foundation support, and were both very gracious in accepting their scholarships.
