What a Great Day!

It isn’t the spotted donkey, but Edna Cassity was able to pet this congenial fellow.

Last week I walked up to Edna Cassity, resident in Kane County Hospital’s long term care, and asked her if we could talk about the Donkey Basket Ball game she went to the week before.

"It was hilarious." Cassity could hardly contain herself. She became animated and wanted to talk all about it. "I had never seen a spotted donkey, I was too slow getting across the floor to get my picture taken with it," Edna admitted. She also said she had always been afraid of animals growing up so it took her a few minutes to get up the nerve to get close to the creatures.

Edna was able to have her photo taken with one of the team donkeys. She told me, "He just stood there as gentle as could be." What a tremendous accomplishment in your senior years.

Cheyenne Wood the recreational therapist for KCH gathered up the residents who wished to attend. She and CNA Sherry Black escorted Edna Cassity, Don Duke, Marty Dering, Shannon Smith and Violet Honey to the Valley’s Donkey Basket Ball game. The residents were hosted to the event by Hernan Garreaud PA-C, who also attended the game.

Kane County Hospital simply could not be more proud of the crew that made this trip possible. It surely brightened up some days and is still bringing smiles to many faces.

While winding down Edna just kept shaking her head and said, " I never thought I would see grown men falling off of donkeys, continue to hold onto their reins while trying to grab a basket ball." She shook her head again and just giggled.
