Olivia Walton PA-C, Clinical Director for the University of Utah’s Physician Assistant’s Program awarded Hernan Garreaud PA-C, the student PA preceptor of the year plaque on September 16, 2009. The plaque states, "Awarded to Hernan Garreaud for years of dedicated service as a preceptor for the Utah Physician Assistant program." This award is recognized for outstanding support of student PAs in the state of Utah.
Physician Assistant students who attend the University of Utah must do rotations in a "real world" climate as part of their educational program. In order to fulfill that requirement they must have a preceptor. The students are generally at Kane County Clinic and Hospital for a period of one to three months. Garreaud has been dedicated to reaching out to these students and "showing them the ropes."
Why? It takes extra time and effort when you are already dealing with a hectic schedule. Garreaud just shrugs, "Because we need good providers, especially in our rural areas. Besides it’s a good way to give back to the people who helped me."
Garreaud served in the National Guard full time for four years as a medic and X-ray tech. He then enrolled in the University of Utah’s Physician Assistant Program. While working at the Utah State Prison Garreaud went back to school and earned his Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies through Columbia College.
He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Kane County Medical Staff. Currently he sees patients in the Kane County Clinic Tuesday through Friday and covers shifts in the emergency department. That would be a full week for most of us but on his weekends he opens the Cedar Mountain Medical and Urgent Care Clinic. He’s a busy guy and an asset to our community.
